God is Love. If we have the truth and love of God within us, we should be channeling God’s love to the world. Wow!
Do you have the love of God in you so that it shines for the world to see? Are you so full of His love that it spills out of you and people want to be in your presence? If God is love and we have God’s Spirit living in us, we should glow with His love for the world to see it.
Where Do We Learn About God’s Love?
The Bible is full of passages that proclaim God is love. Indeed the Bible is His love letter to us.
Our faith in the salvation from God through Jesus allows us to come freely into God’s presence and receive His love. We’ll cover the forgiveness of sin another day. Today we’ll focus on love.
Who Does God Love and Who Are We to Love?
His commandment to us is to believe in the truth of Jesus Christ, His Son, as the way of forgiveness of our sins and reconciliation to God and that we love one another. 1John 3:11-24 To live this commandment is harder than it sounds. The truth of our faith in Jesus and love go together.
It is easy to love those who love us. Even on their bad days, we can be patient and kind knowing they’ll be back to themselves soon.
We love our children even when they’re not returning our love. For most of us, it seems to be part of our DNA.
We love our brothers and sisters in the church. Oh, wait. All of them? Or just the ones who are loving and gentle. What about the ones who grumble, complain, and never seem to be happy? How do we love the ones who are judgemental and quick to point out any sin they see? What about the ones who never speak to you?
We love our neighbours just as we’ve been taught don’t we? What about the lesbian couple across the street? The rowdy party givers a few houses down who keep you up at night and leave their needles strewn in the alley for the kids to find? The neighbours whose house is an eyesore and whose weeds are always seeding into your garden?
Do you love the unlovely people you pass by? Has God put people in your path that you would rather ignore?
Here’s a hard question. Are you unlovable? Have you hardened your heart? Are you cynical? Are you the complainer or the one who never starts a friendly conversation?
Do You Love Yourself With God’s Love?
The first step in being so full of God’s love that we can freely give it away is receiving it. A gift is of no use if you don’t unwrap it and use it as intended. God gave us His Son so we could have a cleared path for us to have a full relationship with Him as a gift of love. Have you received His gift? Do you really believe God loves you and wants fellowship with you?
Okay you believe that God truly loves you and you are His child. Do you love yourself? This is a big stumbling block and an open door for Satan to get a stronghold in your life. If God loves and forgives you, how can you still be so full of self-loathing?
Maybe you don’t hate yourself but you have no confidence or self-esteem. You feel like a victim in your life and you are stuck in the past. You don’t fully trust God and your faith is not full and strong. Every time you make a mistake, fail or sin you have proof that you shouldn’t love yourself.
Do You Need to Be Free of Sin to Have God’s Love?
If you believe this lie,Satan has a spot in your life. How can you be full of God’s love and not love yourself? I know you’re not perfect. God knows it too. He loves you now while you are still a sinner. In Romans 5:8 we read Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners. God has given us the perfect way to help us stop our sinning and move on in His love.
Will He stop loving us if we sin? I can only answer from my own experience and with the scriptures that tell us we all sin. Even Paul said he did what he did not want to do. David committed adultery and murder. Moses murdered. Do you stop loving your children when they disobey or disappoint you?
Our Heavenly Father loves us and knows we’re human. He wants us to be sorry for our sin and to turn from it. That’s repentance.
As we grow with God, He will point out what He wants us to stop and turn away from. Just as your children are different and you treat them differently at each stage of their life, God deals with us individually as our relationship with Him matures.
Don’t you think it’s time to love yourself warts and all as the saying goes. You are a work in progress, God loves you and He’s forming you into a beautiful person who can show the world who He is. Thank Him for the love He’s given you and accept it as His child.
God’s Love is the Perfect Regift
Now you have His love and you love yourself, you can give it away. You cannot give what you don’t have. God commands us to love our spouses, our neighbors, our church family, strangers and even our enemies. That’s a lot of love to give away. It’s a good thing God is love and He freely supplies us with all we need to keep for ourselves and to pass along.
God uses us, His children, to show His love to those who don’t know Him. He uses us to show His love to His other children when they’ve slipped away from His embrace.
Sometimes it’s a simple smile or greeting that cheers a person’s day. Sometimes He asks us for a greater sacrifice of love that requires our time and our resources.
